As a word, it is able to connote a definition ranging from narcissism and self-adsorption, to self-assurance and respect for one’s reputation. In these three text, different ideas are emphasized. Homer's story “The Odyssey emphasizes the heroism of Odysseus, the magic powers of the sirens, steps Odysseus uses to get past the sirens. On the other hand, In the video “O Brother Where Art Thou” it emphasized that Pete gets turned into a frog, the men drink moonshine, and the music of the siren song. In the final text, Atwood's poem “Siren Song” emphasizes that the Siren does not like being stuck on the island, and the content of the song was very tedious. Not only do authors emphasize things, they leave things out.
Just as when Telemachus cries for the first time, Odysseus’ first tears reveal his connection to the Trojan War. Like Menelaus, Alcinous does not ask for him to state his identity, due to hospitality, and instead diverts the other guests’ attention. During this first song, Odysseus disguises his tears with his cloak, in order to be respectful to his host, but also because he is not ready to announce his identity. However, when the bard sings the next story, Odysseus cries freely.. This leads Odysseus to his first step in recovery, in which he is publicly revealed to his host.
After Troy fell Aeneas fled and was planing on making a new troy. However he encounters many trials like Odysseys did. Most of these however were caused by Juno to to deter him from his fate. Eventually Juno relented and Aeneas landed in Carthage, were he had a love affair with Dido. But fate called him again and he left Dido and finally made it to Italy were he founded Rome.
Sympathy, the feelings of pity and sorrow for someone else's misfortune, can push an unwanted burden onto the shoulders of a reader. When reading different stories, antagonists might provoke sympathetic thoughts. A character that has the ability to spring the feeling of pity upon a reader can force a mixed perception of the activities during a story. Appropriation is defined as being able to shift ideas, visuals, key concepts, characters and settings from one context into another in order to manipulate old notions into new innovated ones, for example the Odyssey by poet, Homer in comparison to Margret Atwood’s the Penelopiad. The Penelopiad as a modernized, fresh view of a vaguely described character, which originated from the Odyssey named, Penelope. Penelope is an obscure or cryptic female character who is interpreted to be a cunning, sly, secretive, intelligent, passionate character that can be compared to Shakespeare’s Juliet. In The Odyssey, the Cyclops is a monster because of his key differences from mere human beings, specifically his lack of wit and of morals. Depicting these qualities as monstrous support that cleverness and a general regard for human life were heavily valued in Greek culture. Odysseus easily trick the Cyclops bragging, “I poured him another fiery bowl - three bowls I brimmed and three he drank to the last drop, the fool”(9.404-406). To describe the bowls of wine as fiery foreshadows the demise of the Cyclops. Odysseus was able to use his brain, not strength, to make the Cyclops drink himself into a stupor.
Katrina Mayer once said, “A book is a magical thing that lets you travel to faraway places without you ever leaving your chair.” This quote clearly applies to The Odyssey; this ancient greek epic (The Odyssey by Homer) follows the story of Odysseus of Ithaca and his lengthy voyage home following the Trojan war. The book itself is an ageless classic, however it wouldn't be the same without Homer’s unique use of figurative language to depict this story. His two most effective literary tools were his epic similes and personification. His epic similes gave a romantic description of critical, emotion filled scenes.

In Homer’s Poem, The Odyssey, Penelope is the exceptionally patient and clever spouse of the infamous hero, Odysseus, and the mother of Telemachus. One poignant factor of Penelope’s character is her patience and devotion which is displayed throughout the poem. With her husband absent for a great majority of her life for the later of twenty years and his location unknown, Penelope stays, patiently awaiting Odysseus’ return, all whilst preserving their estate and raising her son by herself. Throughout this time, she had many persistent suitors in pursuit of her, abusing her husband’s absence.
In the beginning of The Aeneid Book IV, Dido is troubled because she feels herself falling in love with Aeneas. She is troubled because she promised herself she would never love or marry another man after the death of her first husband, Sychaeus. She confesses this to her sister, Anna, and tells her that she does not know what to do. Anna tells her sister that if she is to marry Aeneas that it will strength Carthage by having Aeneas and his Trojan soldiers that follow him.
The Twenty-Year Long Journey of Odysseus “My name is Nohbdy: mother, father, and friends, everyone calls me Nohbdy.” The words uttered are a famous quote from The Odyssey by Homer. It is a story that was written in the 7th century B.C. Odysseus (the main character) is lost at sea for twenty years.
You would think I couldn’t need or want anything more with servants to wait on me day and night and priceless treasures to last a lifetime here of Aiaia, but I’m not content. In a way, through Anna’s words, Virgil blames her because of her thoughtless action. In other words, he enhances Aeneas’ manliness and authority by comparing him to Dido, who acts irrationally due to her crazy kind of love although she stands for another authoritative figure in the text.
