In 1975, Aerosmith produced a timeless rock classic known as, “Walk This Way” that became an instant hit and an essential in any rock fan’s collection. In 1986, Run-DMC recorded an updated hip-hop version of Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way” featuring Steven Tyler and Joe Perry. By producing this crossing over Run-DMC broke down cultural and musical barriers between the hip-hop world with the rock realm and has since become immortalized for their success and revolutionary concept.
Since Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way” was such a hit and regarded as a classic even a decade later it held a high place in the heart of rock fans and had a mainstream significance in the public's eyes. In the 1980s, early on rock music was being used to lay the foundations of early hip-hop without the rock and rap communities even realizing it. Aerosmith and other popular rock bands alike were influencing this new burgeoning underground culture. In underground New York a new music movement was starting to take on a new form underground. Inside underground clubs DJs would spin records and rappers or rap groups would have battles or just freestyle over them. On of the most popular records to spin was Aerosmith’s opening riffs to “Walk This Way”, but it was only known as track four on the Toys In The Attic record in those days. Since the rock song was remixed by an up and coming group with a new musical genre it not only places the song “Walk This Way” in the rock category, but in the hip hop category. Run-DMC’s version of “Walk This Way” essentially claimed the song for a new genre and cultural group officially. Since the song was being used in the hip hop world before it was now being projected to the world creating this eternal cross over for this song and showing how cultural and musical barriers can be
