Mulan Analysis

Stories are significant to stimulate and develop the aesthetic development, language development, cognitive development and moral development. My partner, Muhammad Faaiz and me, Faizri Fahmi select the story Mulan for Year 5 pupils based on Year 5 KBSR Unit 9 : Culture and Tradition because from our opinion, we think this story is very suitable to develop all the four elements mentioned above.

First and foremost, we would like to discuss from the perspective of aesthetic elements. According to Chitravelu (2005), the aesthetic experience in literature involves the pleasure we get in reading literature, and at the same time it develops our creativity and imagination in arts. According to Brown (2007) an effective way to stimulate and enhance the cognitive development of students is through skimming and scanning. So, we plan to integrate this activity together with another challenging activity which is the rearranging activity. For example, we as the teacher can ask the students to rearrange the plotline of the story correctly. A part from that, we can also ask some efferent questions based from the story Mulan to enhance the understanding of the students about the story. According to Cox (2008), asking efferent question based from the stories can be an effective tool to stimulate and enhance the cognitive development of the students. For instance, while presenting the story, at the scene where Mulan has to make a decision, the teacher can stop at that part and asks the pupils to give their opinion what is the decision that Mulan made? It can trigger the pupil’s critical thinking skills to think the possible decision made by Mulan. The scene when Li Shang realized that Mulan is a woman, and he had to leave Mulan, then Mulan was give up, teacher can ask the pupils whether the story will end at that part or something will happen and pupils have to state their own reason for their …show more content…

Firstly, it is because the storybook is full with pictures and colourful illustrations which is very attractive and captivating for the pupils. Secondly, the language used is simple with some difficult and complicated words so that the students can understand the story easily and able to grasp the important details and points from the story Mulan. The story Mulan also portrays a good character which is Mulan herself who is brave and obedient to her father and we hope these good characters of Mulan will be a good example and role model for the pupils in their lives. Lastly, we also choose this story because it gives an exposure to our pupils about the Chinese’s culture. For example, we can give examples the costume perspective of Chinese community in the past era such as cheongsam and emperor hat.
