Affirmative action should not hold as much weight as it does in schools. Colleges rather should base acceptance and scholarships on merit. This makes for a higher success rate without completely eliminating diversity in the classrooms. One reason colleges use affirmative action is to give minorities a better chance at receiving higher-level education. However, that’s based off the assumption that minorities do not prosper to the same degree as white people, which is not always true. Many white people live in poverty, and many people from other ethnicities thrive. J. C. Watts puts it like this: “I'm not one that believes that affirmative action should be based on one's skin color or one's gender, I think it should be done based on one's need, because I think if you are from a poor white community, I think that poor white kid needs a scholarship just as badly as a poor black kid.” …show more content…

If those students were not able to receive sufficient education, they will struggle through college. They may not have the capability to perform at the same level as other students. Several non-white college students drop out due to this. At the same time, white students with academic ability may find themselves rejected due to the college’s affirmative action program. If the college needs to have a certain percentage of non-white students, they may choose a student from a minority over a white student with better qualifications. In a way, this discriminates against white people simply because they are not from a minority. It also singles out students by race, something the general public would agree is still
