Even the most ardent health advocate would be hard pressed to deny himself a plate full of crispy, fried chicken. The delectable dish is a favorite in homes and restaurants across the United States, particularly in the south. Despite the its lack of nutritional value, fried chicken is chock-full of history and tradition, and in fact set the table for entrepreneurial empowerment of African-American women after the Civil War. In the last half of the 1800s, the town of Gordonsville, Virginia held the distinction of being “The Fried Chicken Capital of the World” - but not because of the exemplary fried chicken from the kitchens of Gordonsville.
