Another type of stereotyping that mentioned by Hartmann is the beliefs of excellent performance in sports are “inversely associated with intellectual and/or moral excellence” (Hartmann 237). People beliefs often build up by what they saw and heard. Thus, by looking at African American excellence in sports fields, this gives them the stereotype that this excellence produced are due to the lack of other area in which mentioned by Hartmann, the intellectual and/or moral excellence. This is what that gives them the impressions that black athletes are actually brute and savages with no moral and stupid to top it all. In the primary source, the black athletes actually denied this kind of stereotype.
The Minstrel show set the stereotypes for African Americans in the 19th century. With the shows mimicking demeanor and use of black face, the minstrels showed the way they believed African Americans acted. The interlocutor would wink to the audience to establish the mutual understanding that the performers are differentfrom the audience but only because the performers are in the blackface. Acknowledging that the blackfaced white actors are only in black face and are not actually “black” is an important destinction that entertains the white audience and performers. The mintrels would say that the performance was not aimed to discuss the direct connect between the white mintrel performers and the African Americans.
Countless numbers of African-Americans risked their lives against white supremacy, although they were not able to witness the changes they may have caused. The strong insistence by these two writer that media just look on and examine people’s looks without considering their dignities, helps readers visualize how similarly Staples and Cofer view society. For both authors, a myth of the media stating that stereotypes are developing and persisting. In “Black Men and Public Space”, Ben Staples describes how he looks like when he is enough to frighten a young white women on the street late at night. Regardless of the passage of time, typically speaking, people’s vision of Native Americans remains wrapped up in powerful stereotypes. This is why some images we see of Indians can be surprising and perhaps confusing. What would Geronimo be doing sitting in a Cadillac? Why is an Indian woman in traditional native wear, in a salon, getting her hair done? There is a group that is frequently misrepresented and discriminated within American society. That group is the black community. African Americans, though having more rights than ever before, are still greatly stereotyped through media, in a negative and an undesirable manner. When I say the words African American most people think of crime, violence, drugs and watermelon, to name a few. “Straight Outta Compton” by the N.W.A. enforces the negative stereotype of African Americans through promoting narcotics, guns, and murder.
Boys prefer blue, and girls prefer pink (The tempest). All African Americans run fast (Phillip). Asians are good at math (The model minority). These three generalizations of certain groups are considered your typical stereotypes (Neuberg). Whether they are gender or racially based there is a swarm of stereotypes constantly popping up in our culture today, both good and bad.
Prejudice, racism, discrimination, these three words are base pillars of developing stereotypes. Stereotype isn’t a natural behavior but, a learned behavior and it comes both directly and indirectly from popular culture all across the globe. For instance, African Americans are looked down upon because stereotypes portray them to be lazy, incompetent, loud, dirty, abusive, and money hungry. One example, the famous movie, “Scary Movie 2”, the character known as, Smokey, is a African American male whom takes part of alcohol consumption, smokes marijuana, vulgar, and express his intellect as street smart rather than, book smart. Factors can exist in in the perceiver, the target, or the situation. For example, when you look at your target, your interpretation of what you see is influenced by your personal characteristics (Book pg.153). Things that are important to you matter in these situations and the context in which perceptions are interpreted have an impact. I also believe that stereotypes play a factor in this as well. Being African American, I know many of times I have experienced situations where on the job that sly remarks have been made or actions have been displayed towards me.

This research also observed how the film industry continued to change negative stereotypes into accurate representations of African American culture and experiences. D. W. Griffith’s film changed the history of films and remains the original foundation of Hollywood cinema, even though, it is the most racist film in history. The group I choose is LHH (Love and Hip Hop) which is a television show that is aired on VH1. The characteristic from this group is rapping hip hop music lovers, also known as rap music lovers. The sound these girls love from the guys they date whom are signed music artist in the rap, or better described as the hip hop genre. The style the guys display in their music or in their songs rather, consists of a stylized rhythmic music that is popular for accompanying rapping.
