Labor work was a big factor in the late nineteen and twenty century many of the workers had difficult times back then. During this time many of the workers were treated bad, had poor safety standards, the boss wouldn't pay for their workers comp, they were getting paid little money, didn't get no child labor, blacks were being discriminated, women didny have equal rights and no job security. They lived in very bad conditions, didn’t get paid enough to live a good life, working very hard for the amount of money they were getting that didn't really support them much. They did not have much protection. According to, “A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn” it states that “ Railroad work was one of the most dangerous jobs in America, over two thousand railroads workers were being killed each year and thirty thousand injured” which meant that many men working were getting killed because of the poor safety issues. They were not in a safe environment they risked their lives on dangerous areas to get paid to feed themselves and their families. In “1889, records of the Interstate Commerce Commission showed that 22,000 railroad workers were killed or injured” the amount of people working was increasing, many of these workers were getting hurt and the company still wouldn’t do nothing about it. In the book “A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn” states that “dangerously broken stairways . .. windows few and so dirty.. .. The wooden floors that were swept once a year. . .. Hardly any other light but the gas jets burning by day and by night. . . the filthy, malodorous lavatory in the dark hall. No fresh drinking water.. . . mice and roaches” people weren’t taking care of the area it was bad. I felt that the companies wanted their money and it didn’t matter to them how the conditions were, they just wanted to get their money. Like now a days if a worker gets hurt during their job they would get workers comp which will pay the worker as long as it wasn’t their fault but in the nineteen and twenty century if workers got hurt the boss wouldn’t care if they lost an arm or fingers while working they would just get replaced by new men and finish the
