Before and after World War II, African Americans, Japanese Americans, and women faced many problems in America. During World War II, the Cold War also caused many problems. The Civil Rights Movement and World War II caused many social, political, and cultural changes to take place. Before America’s entrance into World War II, Japanese Americans faced many difficulties due to the Pearl Harbor attack. The issues like racism and segregation remained even after World War II, but the focus shifted from Japanese Americans to African Americans. The decisions by the court depended on the social status and the race of a person. After the Holocaust, not all the Nazis were punished, which was unfair to Jews. In America, citizens experienced a similar problem. Criminals who committed numerous crimes were not imprisoned or their punishment wasn’t harsh. During this time period, many African Americans were also murdered, but the justice system didn’t punish the murderers. This happened because the murderers were white or had a high social status. High social status also saved some high level government officials and businessmen who used concentration camp prisoners as forced laborers during the Holocaust. They were punished less harshly or received no penalty at all. The Nuremberg Trials only sentenced twelve out of twenty-two major Nazi criminals to death. (Making Justice at Nuremberg, 1945 - 1946). In America social status also played a big role when Joseph McCarthy, the Senator from Wisconsin, was formally censured, but still remained in the office. Even though he ruined many government officials’ life by making false accusations, he didn’t receive any type of punishment (How McCarthyism Worked). Other than social status, race also influenced the court decisions. African Americans, didn’t receive justice against whites even if there was more than enough evidence to prove the crime. America also failed to promote social equality because of the unequal treatment of African Americans and women. Politically, America’s fear of communism rose after the false accusations of government officials by Joseph McCarthy and HUAC. American also failed to promote social justice because the decisions were based on social status, color of the skin, or one’s culture . America’s failure to give citizens’ the rights they deserve, and violation of the 1st amendment had a huge impact on America politically and socially. The examples prove that even though there were a lot of issues going on during this time period, the government was doing very little to stop this. The government didn’t take any actions to stop social inequalities which failed to promote the American core values. On the other hand, American citizens disobeyed the Civil Rights laws and many more that promoted the core values, which affected certain races and also changed America. This can be connected to the gun control laws today. There are gun control laws but nobody obeys them, and when there is a terror attack only Muslims are blamed because of their religion.
