Although slavery was declared over after the passing of the thirteenth amendment, African Americans were not being treated with the respect or equality they deserved. Socially, politically and economically, African American people were not being given equal opportunities as white people. They had certain laws directed at them, which held them back from being equal to their white peers. They also had certain requirements, making it difficult for many African Americans to participate in the opportunity to vote for government leaders. Although they were freed from slavery, there was still a long way to go for equality through America’s reconstruction plan.
Conflicts during the 1930s through the 1970s were great, the mainstream idea would be due to World War II but what was significantly missed is the struggle that was at home. Different groups of individuals had to fight for their homes and jobs due to the unwillingness of equality of the white man. The values during this time were missing due to the ideas of a man who was out at war. Many different movements began and were impacted during this time women, African Americans, and Natives were all tremendous impacts on the war. Yet it seemed to take second place to the white man in history, even in areas that they significantly impacted on the war.
It was the early twentieth 100 , and the world had already changed trehands dously compared to the world of their parents and grandparents. Slavery had ended in United States more than half a century earlier. While African American English still faced tremendous economic and social obstacle in both the northern and southern DoS , there were more chance than there had been. 6 million African Americans moved from the rural South to the cities of the North during The Great Migration. The blacks wanted to escape the oppressive economic conditions in the south and the promise of greater fortune in the north. Some blacks was being paid to migrated from the south to the north for work and their expenses was being paid. The Pennsylvania Railroad paid the travel expenses of 12,000 blacks.
During the early 1800’s, President Thomas Jefferson effectively doubled the size of the United States under the Louisiana Purchase. This set the way for Westward expansion, alongside an increase in industrialism and overall economic growth. In fact, many citizens were able to thrive and make a better living in the agricultural business than anywhere else. All seemed to be going well in this new and ever expanding country, except for one underlying issue; slavery. Many African Americans were treated as the lowest of the classes, even indistinguishable from livestock.
After the radical reconstruction African Americans were giving some rights but they noticed there were many ways they were still restricted on using or doing these rights. The congress gave them the 13th,14th and the 15th amendments. First, the 13th amendment was to get rid of slavery so they were all freed and able to get and own land but if these freed slaves didn’t not have any land or a job per say they were arrested and hired out to work on a farm.
Although by the late eighteenth century slavery was disappearing from Connecticut the 1790 census indicates that a considerable number of free African American families continued to live in households that were headed by whites. Likely due to the economic and social struggle that remained, however in the town of Fairfield the census contained two households headed by non-whites. One of these two families headed by Sarah Hubbard had been independent since 1769. While most of Connecticut’s African Americans gained their freedom as slavery was abolished the Hubbards do not fit this pattern.
In 1608, the French established their first settlement in Quebec, found by Samuel de Champlain. French Catholics had no reason to leave France, and the Huguenots wished to migrate, but were excluded. Their colony’s population grew quite slow. French Jesuit Missionaries were the first to infiltrate the Native societies. The fur trade helped provide an opportunity for friendly relations.
Ok after the war Mississippi abolished slavery but refused to ratify the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments, and in March 1867, under the Congressional plan of Reconstruction, it was organized with Arkansas into a military district commanded by Gen. E. O. C. Ord. After a lot of agitation, a sponsor for the Republican constitution guaranteeing basic rights to blacks was adopted in 1869. Mississippi was taken back in to the Union early in 1870 after ratifying the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments and meeting other Congressional requirements. While some of the republicans stayed in power the government was composed of new immigrants from some of the north they had African American and obedient Caucasians. In 1874 a man known by
African Americans face a struggle with racism which has been present in our country before the Civil War began in 1861. America still faces racism today however, around the 1920’s the daily life of an African American slowly began to improve. Thus, this time period was known by many, as the “Negro Fad” (O’Neill). The quality of life and freedom of African Americans that lived in the United States was constantly evolving and never completely considered ‘equal’. From being enslaved, to fighting for their freedom, African Americans were greatly changing the status quo and beginning to make their mark in the United States.
In the 1950s there were several laws that kept African American people separated from White Americans. African Americans were not allowed to do anything with White Americans or even be close to them. The White Americans were so harsh toward them that they established laws that said that African Americans could not vote, could not enter the same building of White Americans, they was not even allowed to drink out of the same water fountain. The people of the South were very strict to their beliefs and laws and if any African American was caught breaking any of the laws they were punished and sometimes killed. Some African Americans that were not familiar with the dangers of the south were few of the unfortunate ones to lose their life.
In the late 18th and early 19th centuries the Cherokees were going through a time of rebirth and regeneration. After the American Revolution the Cherokees confronted with economic depression. They gave up their homes, villages, towns and hunting grounds to white Americans. Many Cherokees adopted customs, beliefs and lifestyles of white Americans; they profoundly assimilated White culture because in this way they hoped could survive as a nation in their homeland.
Many millions of European immigrants could become citizens, and they could vote and enjoy the other guarantees of citizenship. These guarantees included security in the ownership and transfer of property, if they were fortunate enough to have any. Native Americans and, after Emancipation following the Civil War, African Americans were hardly ever secure in their citizenship. All of these non-white people might suffer severe discrimination in earning a livelihood, even a poorly paid
