Section 33 of the Canadian Constitution’s Charter of Right, also known as the “Notwithstanding Clause” has many different pros and cons for Canadians and has been a hot topic for a long time among Canadians. Such a clause within the highest law of our land was bound to stir up controversy in Canada, and there are many people who are both for and against the clause for a variety of different reasons. There were several mitigating factors surrounding the clause as well as players behind it and several effects it had on Canadian people. There are also factors needed to implement such a clause, and there are several effects such a clause have on the government who attempts to use it. The cause was part of what was known as “The Kitchen Accord”
Mission and achievements As their mission statement is “The 519 creates space for change, contributing to the advancement of LGBTQ equality and inclusion in Toronto and beyond.” They establish a safe environment for the LQBTQ community to flourish successfully. The 519 has reached many achievements by helping to construct multiple services such as the Anti-poverty and homeless programme that served more than 2,500 meals.
Who are they? I asked several people and no one knew much except that they were a civilian volunteer group that helped the American military during WWII. It hadn’t occurred to me that they are a current, viable, active organization. They do exist!
The executive management staff was 100% white and the support and administrative team were 100% Afrincan American. In a recent survey, only 30% of blacks, 10% of Hispanics and 20% of Asians were very satisfied with their services, compared to 80% of Caucasians. They said they didn’t feel welcomed and nobody understood them. The manager staff had a lot to say back, revealing subconscious racism and bias towards the minority patients, and even toward each other.

Racism is an ongoing issue which had been taking place for centuries. Racism can take various forms, direct, indirect, individual or institutional. Institutional racism however, has been questioned frequently recently in light of criminal justice system, especially and more noticeably in the US now, where many believe the police is treating/handling black people unfairly comparing to other ethnic groups. According to Macpherson (1999) institutional racism is where organisation does not provide appropriate service due to someone’s colour, culture or ethnic origin, and can take form of racial discrimination in forms of attitudes, behaviours and processes. Macpherson developed this definition when undertaking an inquiry of Stephen Lawrence, a black child who was murdered
But one problem that African Americans still face is the unfairness of the American prison and criminal justice system. The United States holds the title as the highest prisoner population in the world. With African Americans account for less than 12% of the United States, they still make up a large portion of the U.S prison population. Black people are incarcerated at higher rates than whites, despite being equally susceptible to committing crimes as whites. The American prison and criminal justice system has a long history of racial discrimination towards African Americans which can be supported through examples of unjust laws, disproportionate incarceration rates among different races, the and cases of African Americans being unfairly persecuted for crimes they didn’t commit.

The Medical Mistreatment of African Americans throughout History Throughout history, African Americans have been exploited not only through hard labor, but in research facilities and hospitals. African Americans have been tested on, abused, and researched without their consent, knowledge, nor full-understanding. Many times they were given false information to rationalize what was happening to them. African Americans were also not administered anesthetics while undergoing surgeries and other painful procedures.
African Americans feel targeted in today’s society because so many innocent African Americans are being incarcerated, shot, and killed. Since 2001, it is 6.1 times likelier to be incarcerated as a black man than a white man. This is all because of skin color. Black Lives Matter (BLM) was a group created to raise awareness for the heinous acts the have presented itself to the black community
The company was founded in 1972 In Chicago and works to aide in healthy development in children and prevent child abuse from occurring. They have a 50 state capital chapter network that works everyday to promote activities that work to make a difference locally and nationally. The program also helps nearly 100,000 families a year through a program called Healthy Families America. Their services focus on shaking baby syndrome prevention, sexual safety, child sexual abuse prevention, peer abuse, bullying, and many more. Their vision is a nation in which no child is ever abused or neglected and believe that help from the public, policy makers, and corporate partners that this idea can be a reality.
