The Queen of Crime Who is Agatha Christie and why is she important? She was a writer in the twentieth century who completed a total of sixty-six novels and fifteen short stories. Agatha Christie’s, And Then There Were None, is a novel that will have one on their toes. Her works were greatly influenced by her personal life and the twentieth centuries rise to feminism. Christie’s novels relate to her and the literary time period in which she wrote. Agatha Christie’s own life and the influence of the twentieth century society greatly impacted the writing of And Then There Were None many others. Christie’s father, Fredrick, did not spend much time at home. In an autobiography Agatha Christie said, “He left our house in Torquay every morning and went to his club. He returned in a cab, for lunch, and in the afternoon went back to the club, played whist all afternoon, and returned to the house in time to dress for dinner. He had no outstanding characteristics” (Acocella 82-88). Christie had a negative relationship with her father and is seen in her novels toward her hatred to men. Fredrick passed away when Christie was only eleven and he was fifty-five. He left the family with nothing, Clara was left to uphold the house and the family financially. Christie pointed out in an autobiography that dinner was often rice pudding, due to the lack of money (Acocella 82-88). Agatha Christie was very fond of her mother. She had characteristics unlike her father, Fredrick. Clara enjoyed writing poetry and studying the soul. Clara’s writings in poetry helped inspire future mystery writer, Agatha Christie. (Acocella 82-88). Also in the family were two siblings, sister Madge, and brother, Monty. Christie’s siblings were a decade older than her, therefore, they were not very close. As a child she was very shy and different from those of whom she was surrounded by. Part of the reason she was so different from children her age was the fact that she did not attend school until later on. Her mother believed that, “early education destroys a child’s brain” (Harmon). Christie gained an interest in reading mystery books at the age of five but was restricted by her mother to only reading in the evening (Baghban). Eventually, she joined a high school in Paris where Clara hoped that Christie would become an opera singer. Little did Clara know that Agatha Christie would soon return home as a mystery writer. After graduation, Clara and Miss.Christie took a trip to Egypt which inspired some of her future writings (Schwartz). Joan Acocella, and American journalists and nominee of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Criticism informs us of Agatha Christie’s relationships. She states that Christie wanted nothing more than to find a man and get married. Soon enough, at age twenty-four, right after the first World War, she met and married Colonel Archibald Christie.
