Agatha Christie Versus Dysgraphia Over forty million American adults have dyslexia (Austin Learning) and 700 million children worldwide struggle from the same disorder (Center for Child and Fam. Policy). Agatha Christie, a famous author, had the same struggles. She also had dysgraphia, and the two disorders together make a terrible mixture for anyone. To begin, dysgraphia and dyslexia are very similar disorders. Dysgraphia is a condition of impaired letter writing by hand. It is a learning disorder within the sphere of written language (Austin Learning). She was born at 2:14 pm on September 15, 1890 in the largest bedroom of the Ashfield home. Ashfield is located on Barton Road in Torquay, Devon, England, and was where Christie lived for most of her childhood (Hack 6). Despite struggling with dysgraphia and dyslexia from a young age, she became very successful. Some of her most famous novels include The Mysterious Affair at Styles and Murder on the Orient Express (NNDB). On January 12, 1976, in Wallingford, Oxfordshire, England, the eighty-five year old author died of natural causes (Hack 230). Her mother made a rule against reading, yet Agatha found a way past the ridiculous outlaw anyway. She would stash a book, The Angel of Love to be exact, in her coat then run to her treehouse to teach herself how to read. However, her nanny and mother eventually found out she had books and could read. Immediately, the small girl’s mother lifted the awful outlaw. Christie’s father tutored his daughter, giving her a small, but proper, education (Hack 9-11). Once she became an author, Agatha used a dictaphone to record her writing. Her secretary would then type the words into transcript, and from there her grandmother would correct both of their work by hand. It took Agatha only a few months to write a book, and around a month to revise it (A. Christie Ltd.). This author was incredibly famous. She sold more than Shakespeare, and the only item to ever outsell Christie was the Christian Bible (NNDB). Christie also received many awards. She was awarded the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) award on New Year’s Day, 1956, and in April 1995 she was awarded the Edgar Awards from the Mystery Writers Association. Further, this famed author was loved by Queen Elizabeth. She presented Christie the CBE award after loving Witness for the Prosecution.
