The privileges we have now such as freedom, freedom to argue to discuss to argue and discuss to express our views to discover to read and write. None of which we could have without those brave enough to go against what the state and religion dictated. In Europe during the 17th century, this movement was known as the Age of Enlightenment. In this time what was once all powerful, religious faith, made way to what would replace it, knowledge. This introduced by the four great enlightenment innovators, Isaac Newton, Denis Diderot, Marques de Pombal, and Erasmus Darwin.

Diderot claimed that knowledge came from the senses rather than from heavenly revelation. Of course the church and king were not fond of his belief so the kind imprisoned him. Not only this but he also seemed to shine light on the tradespeople by recording their knowledge. Diderot brought together the brightest minds who he worked along with for 26 years to produce their encyclopedia. The encyclopedia included philosophy, ideas, craft, and trade skills. Diderot spent three months in prison yet that didn’t detain progress, the encyclopedia was published cultivating a profitable printing industry. Given, that the encyclopedia contained work the church would not accept it was banned and even condemned by the pope to be burned. An 9.1 earthquake that left Lisbon in ruins and tens of thousands of people dead. All the disaster left was doubts and questions onto why such thing occurred to such devoted people? With the attempt to answer the people the church encouraged people to pray and repent leaving people in unease. Taking advantage, of the situation Marques of Pombal persuaded the king to let him redesign Lisbon with the belief that it would foster loyalty. In reality, the rebuilding would only reduce the power of the church and the higher class. He creates a city that belonged to the people by incorporating Enlightenment inspired design. By using the king’s power he not only brought the Enlightenment he also brought freedom from the
