Age of Exploration Research After the Renaissance there was a new found interest in education and knowledge. People moved away from the churches ideas and started to focus on science and that is how the Age of Exploration began. Because of this knowledge people had, they wanted to begin exploring. They knew that the world wasn’t flat and so countries would hire explores to go out to sea and find land and resources. While those people on the ships had a job, they also had disease, poor working conditions, and not a lot of money. Life for an explorer was not an easy job. The diet of these explorers was not so impressive, they consumed around 3,000 calories a day which they go from beef or pork, biscuit or hardtack, hardtack was filled with bugs and disease which they still ate. They drank Ale, wine, or hard liquor. They had a lack of fresh water supply and didn’t have fresh fruits or vegetables. This sickly diet developed into a disease called scurvy. Scurvy rotted away at your teeth and gums and even cause mental breakdowns. People on the ships …show more content…

The ships they had were nothing like we have today. Some expeditions took years to complete and only covered about 100 miles a day. They wouldn’t get adequate sleep either. They had to work through the night to maintain the ships. Crew members also had to be sure they were on their best behavior due to harsh punishments they could face. Disobedient crew members were often beaten or in some cases put to death. Something I thought was interesting was that when I always would think of sailors I would think of old guys running the ships however people could start sailing at the age of 16 and to help work on the ships you could be just 7 or 8 years old. Some young men were also forced into the service. Then when they would finally get to land, many would die because they people on the land would kill them or they would die of exhaustion and
