A famous Chinese proverb states, “One dog barks at something and a hundred bark at the bark”. This use of animal imagery to explain the issues with human behavior can also be seen in Ken Kesey’s 1962 novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The novel, told through the eyes of schizophrenic chronic Chief Bromden, revolves around R. P. McMurphy helping the patients overcome their fear of Nurse Ratched and her power and control over the ward. Throughout the book, Kesey uses animal imagery to depict the personalities and behaviors of Nurse Ratched, McMurphy, and the patients. Nurse Ratched is a wolf, and she thrives off of her overbearing control over the patients in the ward and enjoys having everything conform to her set of rules.
Smith states “It wasn’t that he couldn’t. It was that he wouldn’t,” which displays Seabiscuit’s stubbornness in a relatable way, compelling people to compare themselves or others to Seabiscuit and feel like a part of his family (39). This is again seen during his races as he takes “sadistic pleasure in harassing and humiliating his rivals, slowing down to mock them as he passed, snorting in their faces,” indirectly conveying that character, no matter what kind is better than no character. Even though Seabiscuit is often rude and haughty, this doesn’t stop peoples’ delight because his attitude is entertaining, and contains more emotion than other horses display. At the same time, Hillenbrand writes “They all had their father’s amiable personality,” showing readers that while snobbish at times, Seabiscuit’s heart is larger than his attitude.
This passage from William Faulkner's "Barn Burning" is written to establish the beginnings of the breakdown of the Snopes family - and of Sarty himself - through the destructive storm that is Abner Snopes. The difference in character between Sarty and his father being described in the paragraph shows the beginnings of a rift between father and son. Where Sarty is very expressive as he is "leaping" and "scrabbling" in a "red haze", Abner emotes in a very contained fashion. Though Abner is "harsh" and "cold" as he "jerk[s]" his son, the words are of a very smothered sort of anger. This clear opposition in temperament between the two men direct the reader towards and impending future division.
For example, Tim discovered that his father had been captured by Cowboys on their way home from Verplanks Point trading cattle for supplies to run the tavern. However, Tim and his family learn that “‘In June of that year, 1777, we found out father was dead... There was one funny thing about it though, -- it wasn’t a Rebel prison ship, it was a British one”’(164). Tim expected his father to die by the Cowboys because his father had been threatened before by them, and the Cowboys were known for stealing cattle from traders. However, despite what Tim expects his father was killed by the Loyalists, the side he supported all of his life, and Tim feels inconsolable.

Even twenty years after his running from the war, O’Brien still feels sorry for not finding the courage to tell his parents about his decision of escaping to Canada to start a new life.
