The Agreeable Variety: Being a Miscellaneous Collection, in Prose and Verse, from the Works of the most Celebrated Authors, second edition, was printed in 1724 in London, England. It is a small, reasonably portable novel. Its size shows that it was most likely meant for everyday use by a single person, as the pages only allow for type that is large enough for one reader to study at a time. The book is covered in leather, and there are five raised bands along the spine where the ropes from the book’s binding lay. The front and back boards are wooden. Both the front and back covers are gilt covers, with two thin gold lines running parallel around the edges. The book’s spine is also gilded, with the same line pattern running parallel to each side of the raised bands. A few ropes from the binding have degraded and broken, leaving them visible and making the front cover only partially attached. Though the binding is most likely not original to the book, it is contemporary to its original form. The subtle decoration shows that the book was meant for someone relatively wealthy, but was not so extravagant as to be displayed.
