The connection between the two seemed almost nonexistent. After further reading and research, the correlation between agriculture business and geology looked like a red flag. While not all of the portions of geology may apply to agriculture business, one of the most important ones that is seen and heard of each day is water. Water is a huge part of geology, as well as life, making it an exceptionally essential asset to agriculture business. Those include: groundwater, surface water, and imported water. When agriculture first developed in the San Joaquin Valley, the abundance of surface water was quickly utilized. The first action that had to be taken of course was displacing the water so that there was land to be irrigated. As the use of surface water increased, its availability decreased. Noticing this, people started the use of the ground water available in aquifers underground. Once this source started depleting, the dependency on imported water rose dramatically. The unpredictability of rain water caused many problems for the numerous agriculturists in the valley. If the rainy seasons were heavy for a while the farmers could resort back to the available surface water which would allow the ground water sources to replenish themselves. However, once a few dry spells occurred, the farmers had to pump from the aquifers again. This ongoing cycle has made and continues to make the available water sources unsteady.
