When you watch the show Bull, the second episode, "The Women in 8D", portrays gender bias. The TAC team in the show starts a mock trial, they tried different techniques in order to shape their plea to the jury on her behalf, but failed after several attempts. It was hard for the mock jurors to relate to Mathison.
I. Gender Disparity Guidelines and Data In the context of gender disparity in criminal sentencing, some may think that having said that criminal courts are more lenient on women is just one’s opinion. In fact, a lot of researches and data suggest that there is a strong different in gender in the sentencing outcomes. Men are sentenced to longer prison terms than women. Men are 42% more likely to be sentenced to prison.
Their ears to precious to hear such horrible things from the trials. ¨why shoot I thought you wanted to be a lawyer, you've already commenced going to court, the ladies laughed again¨(lee 308). Not only is this blatant sexism, it is sexism displayed by
Hodell and his colleagues looked at juror gender bias on cases in which a mock jurors determined the guilt of female and male defendants who committed murder. All defendants in their study claimed to be victims of intimate domestic violence and they cited self-defense as their defense. The results of this study were that jurors were more likely to believe a female defendants claim of self-defense than a male defendant claim of self-defense (Hodell, Wasarhaley, Lynch, and Golding, 2014). Hodell, Wasarhaley, Lynch, and Golding (2014) argued that jurors reasoned that a male defendant can defend himself against a female defendant; while it will be harder for a female defendant to defend herself against a male defendant.
Also, less pay because I’m a woman sounds unfair also. I’m glad that women had the courage to fight for their rights and prove that they deserve to be treated equally as men. Female inmates endure many obstacles and just as much stress as men. Women have hormone and changes with their bodies that they must tackle quite often. It is not uncommon for a woman to become pregnant in prison or enter the prison system expecting a child.
Gender roles are present everywhere and are more and more prevalent the further back you go. They define relationships and heavily influence people's actions. Gender roles can hurt those that are trapped in them because they are not allowed the freedom of living like they want. Their bonds were set at amounts that were 54 percent lower than what men were required to pay. • Women were 58 percent less likely to be sentenced to prison. • For defendants who were sentenced to prison, there generally was no gender disparity in the length of the sentence. There were disparities in sentencing for some individual types of crime, however. For example, female defendants convicted of theft received longer prison sentences than male defendants convicted of theft.
Gender should not depend on how people get treated differently from the opposite gender. If someone commits a crime regardless of their gender, they both should have to face the consequences regarding the crime they committed. A male should not be treated different than a female after committing a crime just because he is male and visa versa. Gender discrepancies play a role in everything in our world today. Whether it be in crime, sports, school, or even careers, males are typically punished much harder than females, and also get the most credit when it comes to sports, school, and their careers compared to females who excel in the exact same thing males do, even if the females are better than the males in any of those fields.
The witty domestic comedy that centers around the lives of a few well-to-do families in nineteenth century England, Pride and Prejudice, was published in 1813 after author Jane Austen’s completion of the novel. Her most acclaimed work of literature has withstood the test of time, but this is perhaps due to the idea that Jane Austen has benefited from a feminist rereading more than any other author. While Jane Austen has been criticized for her lack of consideration of the larger societal picture and problems, this in fact enhances the idea that Mary Wollstonecraft would agree to: that Austen’s novel is a satirical device of the time’s treatment of women in a class where the problems would be amplified. While all the women in this novel are
Consequently, there is evidence from studies that draw conclusions that there is gender bias in sentencing for both women and men. On the surface there appears to be a degree of preferential treatment or leniency in the criminal justice system. However, there are other factors that enshroud the whole aspect of biases that include class, race and the offence in question among others. The social movement of feminism found its approach to literature in the 1960s. Which feminism is described to be the belief that women should have the equal rights and opportunities as men. Through outdated stereotypes and normalized misogyny, sexism has been present in the judicial system for a long time. Although judicial figures are supposed to be unbiased, victims often receive unjust treatment based on their gender. The justice system consists of government laws and institutions that are created to protect society and maintain civil rights, while also punishing those who defy the rules. However, in a society filled with gender norms and political discord, it is not surprising for misogyny and sexism to get mixed into this supposedly neutral system. Liza Donnelly’s famous editorial cartoons have recently shed light on the topic and brought national attention to the injustice.
