The longing for affection, the longing for someone to hold and cherish you is something every human might’ve experienced. Becoming affectionate to one another is something every human will do in some period of their life, not only because society says so, but also because that’s what the human mind and body desire. Although, if the longing gets out of hand, it might lead to some trouble. Today, I am going to analyze and compare two literary texts who both illustrate the theme “longing for love” in two different ways. Mary Shelley's tragically misunderstood monster turns 205 this year. People describe the novel Frankenstein to be a gothic masterpiece of love, horror but also plenty of other feelings involved through the pages. The book tells the tale of Victor Frankenstein, a scientist from Geneva who while studying becomes fascinated with the “secret of life”. Eventually, he discovers it and creates a hideous monster from old body parts. Frightened of his own creation he abandons it in hopes that it will disappear. Sadly this is an action that will haunt him and his family for the rest of their lives. It does not make it easier for Frankenstein when the monster discovers his need for love and affection, sincerely because he feels alone. Throughout the book, all the monster wants is company. Firstly, his longing to be accepted by Victor, and then the longing for a fellow creature, maybe even a lover, created especially for him. It is presented differently though, where in Frankenstein we get to read about a monster who’s never before experienced any physical or emotional signs of love. He is longing for something clearly out of instinct, wanting what his mind or body desires. Something so unfamiliar to him, becomes so attractive.
