The city of Long Beach in California has a long-standing history of air pollution, which has contributed to adverse health effects and environmental degradation. As one of the largest and busiest ports in the United States, Long Beach faces unique challenges in addressing air quality concerns. In recent years, significant efforts have been made to reduce pollution levels and improve the air quality in the region. Despite being a coastal city with the potential for ocean breezes to improve air quality, the people of Long Beach as a whole should promote sustainable transportation options and encourage the government to monitor harbor business pollution in order to reduce air pollution.

The AQMD was established in 1976 as a regulatory body responsible for monitoring compliance with the Clean Air Act. Ironically, Long Beach, the location of the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) headquarters, has long been plagued by air pollution issues. Despite the AQMD's watchdog role, Long Beach continues to struggle with high levels of air pollution, even though the city has implemented stricter emission standards for cars, trucks, and ships and has mandated the use of cleaner fuels and advanced technologies in an attempt to reduce pollution levels. The Board of the Harbor Port Commission of Long Beach adopted the Clean Air Action Plan in 2006 and formulated a comprehensive plan to address air quality issues related to harbor activities, which was further updated in 2010 and again in 2017. The most recent update contains aggressive goals to transition to zero-emission cargo handling equipment by 2030 and to zero-emissions drayage trucks by
