He was referred to as the “Public Enemy Number One” by the FBI. Al Capone was a sly gangster who left his mark on crime in the 1920’s through bootlegging and racketeering operations. Al Capone hasn’t always been the bad guy. He was born January 17, 1899 in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up living a normal life in a New York tenement, but by the age of 14 he was expelled from school for hitting a female teacher. He never returned to schooling and started living his life around bars. He became known as a drinker in Chicago and hit a parked taxicab one night trying to drive home drunk. This was the first time that Al Capone had got arrested. He tried to clean up his act after his family moved to Chicago from Brooklyn, but the law against prohibition expanded room for bootleggers to break laws. Al Capone became crime partners with Johnny Torrio. They would run numbers, participate in gambling, and bootlegging. Torrio introduced Capone to Frankie Yale, a fellow gangster. When Torrio was ready to retire Al Capone took over as the leader of the Four Deuces, Torrio's headquarters in Chicago. In 1923 a new mayor of Chicago was elected and Capone knew that he had to move his headquarters out of town. Al Capone and his brother Frank moved there operations to Cicero, Illinois. There Frank helped take leading positions within the Cicero government. Frank also helped run brothels, and participated in gambling.
