Al Capone Al Capone is allegedly the most famous crime boss in American History. He is known for his illegal alcohol kingdom, and being behind the most infamous gang massacre, the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. His rise to fame is an intense story, where he went through all phases of love, hate, grief, and triumph. He went from being a Robin Hood to the people of America, to the person everyone wanted locked in prison for the rest of eternity. Al Capone came from humble beginnings and managed to rise to the top of America’s mafia world, and when he finally passed away he secured his title as America’s most famous criminal (History.com editors.) Al Capone was born in Brookelyn, New York. His parents were Italian immigrants who gave birth to eight children after moving to America seeking a better life. They lived relatively normal lives with his father being a barber and his mother being a seamstress. At his Brookelyn elementary school he did well until around the sixth grade where he began to struggle. Instead of going to school, he would hang around at the docks. They finally busted him on twenty-two accounts on tax evasion. He plead guilty and was convinced he would go into prison with a minimal charge against him, he was very wrong. He withdrew his guilty plea and ended up being sentenced to eleven years. The first two years he was in a federal prison in Atlanta, but when he was busted bribing guards was moved to Alcatraz. His health began to steadily decline and he ended up getting dementia that stemmed from neurosyphilis. His sentence ended after six and a half years, because he was sent to a mental hospital in Baltimore where he was forced to remain for three years. For his final days he lived in Miami with his wife where he finally died of cardiac
