During the 1920s/1930s Al Capone emerged as a very important person in regard to the culture and history of the time. one of the reasons for Al Capone’s notoriety was simply because of his power as the co-founder and later boss of the Chicago Outfit. as boss he lived a lavish lifestyle and consequently inspired other minority groups that they to can rise from poverty transforming the Chicago underground. Capone was also seen as an important figure due to his philanthropic gestures include but not limited to feeding the poor and paying for medical bills of innocent people injured in gang violence.

Prominent figures such as Jacob Riis argued that Italians had no chance of improving their lives due to their lack of intelligence. Al Capone discredited all of these allegations with his life story and gave many americans hope that they too can improve their own lives. Italian immigrants who faced poverty and systematic discrimination would often glorify Capone’s achievements and were directly inspired by his success. Capone's success made going into the gangster business a popular way to escape misery and struggle for poor american minorities. This transformed the Chicago underworld into a place dominated by Italian and Irish immigrants. Besides running a highly profitable criminal organization Al Capone made a series of positive contributions during the 1920’s that helped out many people in his community. Al Capone’s organization alone created about seven thousand jobs for the people of Chicago. Unusual at the time, Capone “looked at the value of a person’s talents, rather than the color of their skin,” and was able to give african americans jobs as bootleggers in his organization. Capone soon began to act as a philanthropist as he attempted to spread his wealth. During the tough days of the depression Capone financed a soup kitchen that feed thousands of people. Capone would also go visit the soup kitchen and give words of encouragement to all the very poor people there. Capone’s acts of generosity did not stop with his soup kitchen he would also bring christmas presents to all of the children that went to the Richardo school, donate heavily to catholic churches, and gave extravagant tips to news runners. Al Capone did not condone gang violence on innocent people and would occasionally pay the medical bills of people injured by gang violence.
