Foster care and adoption are two ways that give these kids hope. Last year 2.5 million kids were homeless at one point. Alana DeMoss helped just a few of those kids Even though she views herself as a everyday person going through life trying to make herself and everyone around her happy. Little does she know that she is more than that. Her and her husband overcome immense obstacles to start their family. Alana helps more than just her kids grow into the world; she teaches these kids life lessons and skills while also raising her own kids. During the time that Alana and her husband were trying to find happiness for themselves and for kids that needed loving parents, stuff had to be done first. According to AdoptUSKids.Org, families have to go through many steps to become officially able to be a foster parent and to adopt. Those steps consist of many interviews with the family trying to become a foster parents or adopt, but also interviews with others that can speak for you to a certain extent. Also, home studies are done and trying to find very important data on the couple. All of this would go into a report on the family. The family can also request specific personalities and backgrounds of kids, but the report that is done will suggest what age of kids you should receive and the number of kids(“Getting Approved to Foster or Adopt.”). After many months of waiting for the process to be done, which would be just over 6 months for the DeMoss’s, the family finally received children and couldn’t be happier. One of the hardest experiences Alana faced was when a little girl had to say goodbye to her biological parents right before she was to go and live with the DeMoss’s. Soon after fostering Alana and her husband adopted two kids. One little girl and one little boy. She really wanted to stay at home with her kids that she loved so much, but financially that was not a viable option for her if she wasn’t working. So, she thought outside of the box and came up with a way that she could be with her kids and earn a living. Alaa decided she was going to start a babysitting service so she could be with her kids, make a living, and now she could also be a significant part of other kids lives. In my interview with Alana I asked her what a typical day was like babysitting. “The first kids arrive at 5:15 and the last kids leave at 5:15. A 12 hour work day for Alana. Between those hours kids either go to school or they spend the day at the DeMoss’s house. During the day those kids that don’t go to school they eat breakfast if they haven’t yet or they go downstairs and play games and watch TV. Preschool kids are picked up during this time and jump right in to the entertainment. The day goes on and then after all the kids leave Alana is with her kids and husband for the rest of the night (DeMoss). Alana DeMoss shows as what Phycologist Frank Farley says is “small h heroism.” Farley describes small h heroism to be “everyday heroism, helping others, doing good deeds, showing kindness, etc (Cherry)”.
