In modern storytelling, it is common to use comparisons to make details easier to understand and lead the audience to a certain conclusion. A much more complicated form of this comparison is juxtaposition. Juxtaposition occurs when an author places two ideas/concepts/characters parallel to each other in order to compare them. The film Pan’s Labyrinth written and directed by Guillermo del Toro serves as a splendid illustration of juxtaposition in film. Beginning with the protagonist Ofelia in 1944 Franco-era Spain, the director presents the parallels between the evils of Ofelia’s make believe world and those evils belonging to the fascist regime and her step-father, General Vidal who is representative of this regime.

The intensely ferocious war was between the Republicans and the Fascist nationalists, lead by General Francisco Franco. Victory was in favor of the nationalists and General Franco ruled Spain for the next 36 years after the war, up until his death in 1975.

In my own interpretation America represents change and the believe system as well as the way religion was previously practiced was now changing. This change was greatly influenced by the intellectual movement called Enlightenment, which started in Europe and this influence had bearing on the Great Awakening. Besides Puritans now there were Catholics in Maryland, Quakers in Pennsylvania and the Episcopal Church in the southern states.
“Execution” by Edward Hirsch is about an adult recollecting his thoughts about his high school football career and especially how his coach inspired him because his authoritative role model was battling cancer. The speaker talks about the coach’s goal for “perfect execution” and the infinite strategies the coach would draw up in order to reach his goal. The speaker concludes with their team’s loss against “the downstate team” and how they were ironically defeated by “perfect execution.” A superficial reader might assume that the poem was about the disappointing results that came from his team working hard to reach a goal, but the author’s use of impersonal tone and irony in the fact that their team’s loss is caused by “perfect execution” shows how a strong force can be conquered even when putting your best foot forward when accepting a challenge. Ray Bradbury born in 1920 to a middle class family. Bradbury went on to write and publish over five hundred pieces of literature. One of the novels he wrote was Fahrenheit 451, where he attempted to predict what the United States of America would look like in the future. The novel illustrates the idea of a totalitarian government and society burning books to stop the spread of knowledge, by following the development of the main character Guy Montag. Furthermore, the novel bring up the idea of Plato’s cave, in which Montag attempts to overcome the ideas of the society he grew up around.
Introduction In a genre that has been dominated in recent years by the same cheap jump scares and unnecessary gore, Mexican director Guillermo del Toro has breathed life into horror again by combining it with elements of fantasy and historical fiction. In many of his iconic films, del Toro immerses his audience in stories where terrifying monsters are outshined by the cruelty of humans. Utilizing this aspect, he often provides a commentary on politics, in particular the subject of fascism, interwoven into his films. Examining his career, no film defines Guillermo del Toro’s proficiency as a both director and a writer more than his 2006 film Pan’s Labyrinth.
In A Paradise Built in Hell, Rebecca Solnit focuses on the occurrences of the aftermaths of five major North American disasters and how strong bonds within communities form because of those disasters. Moreover, although providing insight on these tragedies, Solnit presents her case with a redundant political bias and can seem to show problems that were not there.
Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), directed by Guillermo del Toro, is a gorgeously realised tale of fantasy and horror, set against the backdrop of post-Civil War Spain. The story follows a young girl, Ofelia, who travels to the countryside with her ill mother to live with her new stepfather, Vidal, a captain in Franco’s Fascist army. The film explores how Ofelia uses her imagination as a copying mechanism to deal with the monstrosities of her reality as well as to interpret the horrific events unfolding around her. Del Toro employs a number of cinematic devices including cinematography, sound and editing to effectively draw parallels between Ofelia’s reality and imagination, ultimately creating a powerful film that condemns the nature of Fascism.
he effect of a horrific memory on a small fragile boy is clearly depicted in the book Fugitive Pieces by Ann Michaels. Furthermore, Jakob’s sister is used during his life to help him cope with the memories of the holocaust. He see’s her during his hallucinations because of his PTSD and is defiantly part of the reason why he is so traumatized. His nightmares continue from his childhood even into his adulthood. Because of the dramatic experiences Jakob has gone though he also becomes a writer of the future, in which he can help prevent such catastrophe’s from ever happening.
In December of 2006, the film Pan’s Labyrinth was released. Considered as a dark fantasy film, it depicts a young girl, Ofelia, along with her mother traveling to live with her new father, an officer in the Spanish army who is attempting to quell a guerrilla uprising. During this time, she meets an Faun, who tells of her past life as a princess of the Underworld. In order to reclaim her status, she must complete three dangerous tasks, all in which she must battle monsters of varying degrees. However, we quickly come to learn that they are not the only kind of monsters she must face, and that not all monsters have monstrous appearances, but can be of the human nature.
The labyrinth is an idea that symbolizes the maze that is life. It winds through so many different kinds of suffering, some serious and some insignificant.
