Good evening ladies and gentleman. Tonight, the negative team has not provided us with solid arguments as to why we should permit the sale of alcohol after midnight. Before I summarise my team’s case, I will begin with rebuttal. (REBUTTALS) In summary, my team has clearly highlighted how prohibiting the sale of alcohol after midnight dramatically reduces crime rates and alcohol related violence. In addition, we have thoroughly explained the social impact and the fact that the government has a responsibility to its citizens, as well as educating the younger generation to prevent a binge drinking society. This is incorrect as we are NOT closing down the stores. These licensed liquor stores can still sell alcohol until midnight and make a tidy profit. However, they should come to a standstill after midnight, as the interests of an individual and society should take priority over profit!!! Furthermore, the money spent on alcohol-related issues is significantly greater compared to the money the small businesses gain. In 2005, the total costs for alcohol-related crime in Australia was $1.7 billion. The social cost for alcohol-related violence (which excludes costs to the criminal justice system) was $187 million and the costs associated with the loss of life due to alcohol-related crimes amounted to $124 million. What is more important - profit or people? According to the National Drug Strategy Household Survey, approximately 1 in 4 Australians were a victim of alcohol-related abuse. The rates of physical and verbal mistreatment by a person affected by alcohol were more than twice the rate for other drug types. This is not the case because prohibition placed a ban on the sale, production, importation and transportation of alcohol beverages. The purpose of this debate is to merely stop the sale of liquor after midnight, not banning it completely. The opposition is taking this to the extreme – we are just prohibiting it for a few hours after midnight. What harm can this bring? Just because the sales MIGHT go underground, doesn’t mean that we won’t do anything to improve our current situation. This is just a possibility and even if some people try and access alcohol on the black market, it will only be a minority so we will be able to deal with this issue. Nanny State The negative speaker stated that Australia will become a nanny state if the government continues to be overprotective or interfere with personal decisions. This is incorrect as we are doing this for the common good. In recent years, crime rates have escalated to the point where it is absolutely appalling.
