Alcoholics Anonymous Motivation for Observation: I decided to attend and AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) Support group. Many of my family members are alcoholics. I have experienced many of the devastating effects that alcoholism has on people and families. It is easy for me to understand these addictive behaviors because I have an addictive personality, as well. I have never been addicted to alcohol but I have been addicted to other things like nicotine and exercise (I used to exercise 6 days per week for 4-6 hours per day). The visit to the support group have me more insight on addiction and the struggles that people go through regarding their addictions. Setting: The group met in a basement room at a local church. One person identified that they felt like a prisoner sometimes. They felt, because alcohol is a legal drug that it was harder to stay away from it (alcohol) than a drug like cocaine. Some of the other people at the meeting stated how hard it was to even go to the grocery store because of the isles of alcohol that are sold there. Some people admitted to how hard it was to wake up in the morning thinking about drinking alcohol. They said that they would think about it all day. They also stated that is was the last thing that they thought about at night. They did admit some days are easier than other days but they have learned to take every day just one at a time. Using my past experience, my current experiences, and the experience with meeting with this group will make me a more rounded addiction counselor. It will really help me be able to look past the persons addiction and see what person they can and want to be. I will be able to support them in their journey to stop using what they are addicted to. I will be able to help people cope and deal with the stressors that they are facing and that is causing them to use the drug that they are using. I will be able to help them find better and healthier alternatives to dealing with
