Historical Background ALDI is a retail grocery store that first started in 1913 when Anna Albrecht opened a small food store in the town of Essen, Germany. By 1948 her sons had taken over for her and expanded to four locations. In 1976, ALDI made its United States debut in Iowa. Since that time there has been dramatic growth in the United States and by the end of 2022, there will be nearly 2,500 ALDI stores in the United States alone!
