Peter Wood’s book, A Strange New Land gives an intrinsic synopsis of slavery from the very beginning of slavery in the Americas dating 1492 all the way through the start of the American Revolution in 1775. Wood reveals insight into the excruciating lives and the daily challenges slaves in the Americas endured.
Our America is a book and a movie of the struggle in the Southside of Chicago. Even though, the main plot of the book and the movie was how two characters named Lealan and Lloyd find a way to broadcast their struggles in living in the Southside of Chicago. But, both the book and the movie have the main plot of Eric Morse’s death. Which happened in 1994, two boys Johnny and Tyrone threw a 5 year old boy named Eric out the window because they wanted him to steal candy and he didn’t and so Eric snitched on them. Our America: the book and the movie has similarities and differences such as the plot , character, and other things.
The author, Douglas R. Egerton, has his M.A. and Ph.D. from Georgetown University. His grandparents were slaveholders and believed that slaves were property. He became interested in race relations because of grandparents and the television series “Roots”. He specifically concentrates on race relations in the American South. He is now a history professor at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York.
Slavery Howard Zinn Ch. 2 Paper Slavery can be traced all the way back to 1619. This is when one of the first ships came over to Jamestown, Virginia, which is one of the first established colonies. Twenty slaves were boarded on a ship, in horrible conditions, just to land in the Americas where they would become slaves. Enslaving people and treating them like things because of their race or religion is unjust to the human person.
Despite the growth made through the civil rights movement today it still stands the same. Slavery is addressed in the book Copper sun by Sharon Draper. This story is about a young girl named Amari living in a small town who was taken by white people to America to become a slave. She was purchased as a slave to work in the Derby Farm and meets a girl named polly. Polly and Amari become friends and grow as people throughout their journey.
Douglass claims in the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, by human nature, humans simply want to sense and be superior than others as it triggers the sensation of possessing authority over others. Individuals will possibly result to anything in order to obtain this state, to the point of brainwashing others whether it was desired or not by the individuals themselves. To experience the sensation of having authority, people conformed to such actions which can be shown in when, “Colonel Lloyd had three sons—Edward, Murray, and Daniel,—and three sons-in- law, Mr. Winder, Mr. Nicholson, and Mr. Lowndes. The Abolitionists Growing up as a Christian I never could understand how people claimed to be saved or god’s servant but yet can discriminate against skin color. I was taught God is of love regardless of skin color, size or how the person looks. Such as Caucasians with African Americans and even so how could they attend church but yet have slave servants in their home? As shown in the documentary most of the film was a conflict about slavery and the few whites that was against it. Such as “Angelina Grimké” a Caucasians female Christian who despised slavery and watch her parents live with it with no moral or self-respected.

Unchained Memories Review The documentary Unchained Memories were reading by African American actors and actresses from the last generation of born into slavery slaves and their experiences as slaves, their treatment as slaves, and the culture of the time. This documentary really stood out from other documentary and movies because these narratives were from actual slaves and none of the slaves had the same or even similar experiences. These narratives are so precious that they are held in the Library of Congress. Unchained Memories helped better my knowledge of the history of slavery in America because it solidified how hard the slaves were worked and how awful they were treated.
I only had a broad idea of the major events in the America’s history, and mostly what covered the English conquerors and settlers as the famous Christopher Columbus. Now I know that there was a big Spanish attempt to conquer lands in America, and the unification of Spain under Ferdinand and Isabella made that happen. There were many different reasons why a European would move to the New World, it could go from religious freedom or to embrace the possibility of a more prosperous life. The 13 colonies and how Virginia grew economically because of tobacco, the alliance between Native Americans and settlers when they needed, are examples of things I did not know when I first started this class. There was a lot of interesting information about Native

In the film 12 Years a Slave the editor, Joe Walker, makes use of a couple of techniques and styles that adds to the film in its own way. Long shots – Joe kept the long shots as long as he thought was necessary to add to the subject matter and the feeling he wanted to bind with the story. At the end of the film there’s this extremely long shot where Solomon is practically staring at the camera for about a minute and a half. The timing of that shot is so perfect because it’s not too short so you don’t have enough time to think about what just happened or too much time to overthink the situation. Closer to the end of the shot he lets the sound fade slowly and rapidly gives you a wakeup call when the next shot starts off where Solomon and the rest of the slaves are busy working in the field.
