Alexander the Great is a well-known man who conquered much land at his time. Alexander the Great was born on July 21, 356 BCE and died on June 10 or 11, 323 BCE. His achievements in his life are incredible for all that he is done. His most incredible act was taking control of certain lands. From the very start, he had a lot of power. His father was Philip II, King of Macedonia, and Olympias. His father was never there for Alexander the Great because he was always off taking control of his military duties as a commander. Although he was never there, his father was still a great military role model to Alexander the Great. He first crossed Dardanelles with 14,000 Macedonian soldiers and 7,000 ally soldiers. Alexander’s cavalry was impressive that included 13 foot spears and shields. The army didn’t just include soldiers, but people who could give the army an advantage such as scientists and engineers. He finally confronted the Persian army at the Granicus River. The Persian army consisted roughly about 40,000 men. Persians plan to assassinate Alexander the Great failed and the fled. Alexander the Great won victory and only 115 of his men were killed. In this battle, Alexander the Great showed great leadership as a commander of an army without any help at such a young age. “This battle was in some ways the most important of Alexander’s career…It was important because it was the first real battle in Asia…the circumstance of the battle reveals not only courage and confidence, but also his fine political sense and his enormous good fortune” (History Western Civ. 3). His journey through Asia showed how much he meant. He was courageous enough to travel in areas where little people saw. His great military skills helped him in his conquests. Having a father with much military knowledge helped him with knowing how to take command of his own army when he was able to take control as his fathered was murdered. His father’s death was his inspiration. Invading Persia shortly after his crowning showed bravery and how he wasn’t afraid to what he could do with his men. The battle of Granicus was his first battle where he displayed his skills. His next battle was in Issus where he faced King Darius the third. This wasn’t his only encounter with King Darius the third, but he still won the battle since King Darius the third cowardly fled and left his family behind. Becoming pharaoh of Egypt was another amazing accomplishment in his life where he knew yet again how to take control. At the battle of Gaugamela, Alexander the great won again and King Darius fled again. Another magnificent accomplishment by Alexander the Great was crowning himself king of Persia at the death of King Darius the third. The last final battle for Alexander in India was yet again another victory.
