Vail Village lies blanketed in glistening snow and bursting with wildlife. The branches of the native trees bow with the heavy load of snow they carry, almost caressing the ground beneath them. The evergreen trees appear vibrant against the white blanket that spreads as far as the eye can see, swaying in the blistering winter winds, whilst icicles fall from the trees, shattering as easily as glass. Chilled squirrels jump precariously between trees and ricochet through the deep piles of snow. The world falls silent as the delicately patterned snowflakes glide angelically and weightlessly onto the undisturbed, glistening bed of snow, like colourless confetti in a beautiful winter ballroom. “Alfie for God’s sakes! Dig your edge in Alfie! I'm comin’!” Suddenly the trail curves abruptly and Alfie is out of sight from his companion.
With a sigh, he veers off his own trail to rescue his helpless companion. As he approaches Alfie, he notices Alfie’s hand plow onto the snow, his head hitting moguls of ice and his body somersaulting down the mountain, until suddenly he veers towards a shaded patch of douglas fir trees and abruptly stops.
“Miles”, Alfie whimpers, “Miles, I think my wrist broke, and my head hurts. Miles I need your help. I’m hurt.”
Both men glance down the mountain. Alfie’s snowboard is ensnared in the distant undergrowth of snow several metres down the trail. His gloves and goggles are sprawled through the powered snow, almost trapped in the mogul crevices.
Miles rolls his eyes and sighs. “Alfie! Alfie, for God’s sakes get out of the snow! You always do this! Alfie you always hurt yourself and you always break everything! You leave me to pay and to help you! You say sorry and you never mean it! I'm so sick and tired of always having to help
