It was still fresh in his mind. From the tone of his father’s voice, to the exact words that were used, Alfred F. Kirkland could remember every little detail of that moment. Though his family had always been like this – dysfunctional – he had never, ever, seen his father like this before. It scared him. “That bloody Parliament! Passing something as ridiculous as that! A stamp act?!” Alfred crossed his arms. “And father doesn’t think anything of it! Doesn’t he know what’ll happen if we just let this pass by?!” He huffed, and stuck his hands in his pockets.

Alfred nodded his head, and pulled the copy of the newspaper from his bag.
“Here it is! British Parliament Passes New Act! And it’s called the Stamp Act! They’re going to tax us for using paper!”
“Hm, that’s fine. I guess we’ll just have to work harder. We can’t make this land flourish if we’re lazing around all the time,”

Alfred couldn’t believe it. His father was fine with this?! He was fine with being taxed like this?! He would think that this would be the last straw for all of them! But his father, Arthur J. Kirkland, thought that this was completely acceptable.
“Oh, ok. Matthew? Mama? What do you think about this?” He turned to look at the rest of his family.
“Alfred, I think you have to understand that sometimes, God sends us these challenges so we can overcome them. And if God believes that this is the best way to do it, we just have to look for an opening.” His mother answered.
“Yeah, we just need to work a bit harder. No big deal!” Matthew agreed.
“So, you’re saying, that we should just take it and continue like this?” Alfred frowned. “That’s ridiculous! They can’t do this! We have to pay extra just to write letters to Nana! We have to pay extra just to read the
