Alfred Tennyson We can say that Alfred Tennyson deserves all of the attention he gets. Arthur Hallam was one of a couple people who have inspired and shaped Alfred Tennyson’s life and works. His close friend Arthur died due to a stroke which motivated him to write the “Ulysses” on behalf of his death. His poem was chosen simply to impact individual’s desire to change even though they were old. They can still make a difference in life and be noteworthy. Alfred Tennyson was born on August 6, 1809 in Somersby. His family was known to have a strain of epilepsy. Alfred started writing poetry with two of his brothers in their teens. Although many of his poems were successful, “In Memoriam,” was recognized to be one of the best. Although they have grown old they can still be noteworthy. “We are not now that strength which in old days…” (Tennyson 66) Here, he portrays that we are weak but are still strong intellectually and contain a strong will. Also telling them to stand strong and achieve greatness, describing strength and weakness in relation to time. Don’t let anything drag you behind while moving forward. “To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.”(Tennyson 66) This poem is specifically used in the movie “Dead Poets Society” due to the new teacher “John Keating” trying to inspire every student to change and perceive things in a different way. In the movie, the portion of the Ulysses was revived by Neil in one of the meetings of the “Dead Poets Society.” The poem set in the movie is perfect because it’s lyrical, and despairing yet hopeful. This is great for the students too because it clearly changed their perspective at the end of the movie when they stood on the desks saluting the fallen Mr.
