In the article Algebra in the early years? Yes! Young Children by Taylor-Cox, J she touches on why algebra is important and why students should learn algebra in the earlier years of life. This article gave examples of ways teachers can teach algebra to students in kindergarten and first grade without confusing them. She talked about how we can touch on multiple concepts and not just sticking to the simple concepts. In the article the main reason that showed why algebra in the early years is important is “Algebra in the early years establishes the necessary groundwork for ongoing and future mathematics learning” (Taylor-Cox 1). This statement basically sums up this whole article. When students learn algebra early it can help them succeed in their everyday situations. When talking about Algebra in the early years it is broken down into 4 sections. Those sections are patterns, mathematical situations and structures, models of quantitative relationships, and change. When the students learn these concepts they should be able to use them in real life situations. Which is why they should be taught to students in an interconnected way. The one thing that stood out to me in the patterns section was how it talked about “building the foundations of algebra through everyday experiences with patterns” (Taylor-Cox 2). We use math every day and we also see math everywhere around us. The pattern of “clap, stomp, clap, stomp…” can be used with students even under the age of 5. She talked about this type of movement pattern being beneficial to those children who are of an early age. As students grow older they are able to pick out more complex patterns. Patterns are everywhere and when students can get the knowledge of picking out patterns early it will help them to succeed at algebraic
