Alice Walker Alice Walker is an African American novelist, short story writer, poet, and political activist (Alice Walker Biography). She became very noticeable by her third novel, The Color Purple. She is the author of three collections of short stories and essays. She wrote several children’s book and six volumes of poetry (The Color Purple). Alice Walker is a wonderful person because of her background information, the third novel that she wrote and Alice Malsenior Walker was born on February 9, 1944, in Eatonton, Georgia. She is the eighth and the youngest child of Willie Lee Walker and Millie Tallulah Grant. Both Willie and Millie work as sharecroppers. Her family was very poor. Alice has suffered a serious injury when she was eight years old. At eight years old, she was playing with two of her brothers and she was shot in the right eye with a BB pellet gun. They were playing cowboys and indians game at that time. After that day her classmates teased her about her right eye being damaged. She became shy because of the visible mark on her right eye. She went to Spelman College because she got a full scholarship. While attending to Spelman she became very active and she fully supported the civil right movements. Alice eventually transferred to Sarah Lawrence College in New York. In 1965 Walker graduated from Sarah Lawrence College with a Bachelors of Arts degree. After college, she moved to Mississippi. She worked as a social worker, teacher and lecturer after graduating from college. Two years after she graduated from college Alice Walker married Melvyn Leventhal, a white civil rights attorney. Alice and Melvyn were married on March 17, 1967. They both have a daughter named Rebecca Walker before they got divorced in 1976. ( Alice Walker
