Theme Analysis: All Good Children

Photography, writing and art are all products of creativity. However, what if you were to get rid of the process of creativity, a process that gives birth to all the museums, movies and books in this world.
The destruction of the creative process is what has happened for the characters in the book “All Good Children”. The theme of this book is that creativity is a gift. The first quotation that demonstrates this theme is seen during Max’s drive through New Midtown. During this drive Max quotes, “New Midtown is monotonous. Everything in the town is the same age, same style, same color” (Austen, 12). Max says this quote before creativity is physically taken out of his city. Yet this is what the world would look like if creativity started to lack. Many people don’t see this though, as they often take their creativity for granted. The next quote which I believe demonstrates the theme of creativity being a gift is when Max is watching a vaccinated sports team (called the Warrior) play football “Mr. Hendricks was right. The warriors have no hope of winning. The Chiefs are no bigger or faster but they have the advantage of not yet being zombies” (Austen, 107). This quote uses the metaphor of calling their team zombies to better emphasize the theme as zombies are mindless dead humans who only have one goal that of which is to eat brains. This is appropriate comparison as a person who lacks creativity is very much like a zombie as they too only have one goal that goal being (in the case of the sports team) to win a game. This is not possible however as they are facing off against a team which has been zombified making them unable to creatively think of another way around a situation such as the other team’s strategy. The third and final quote that relates to the theme is found when Max is taking his sister Ally trick or
