Now, the popular holiday, Day of the Dead, is celebrated from October 31st through November 2nd by visiting the graves of dead friends or family members. People who participate in Dia de los Muertos leave food, candles, incense, a poem, or a picture at the altar to honor the past lives of people they love.

Dia de los Muertos is a Mexican “ memorial day” that celebrates the lives of those who have passed. As a beautiful honor to this day, Mr. Garcia’s Spanish class, was given the task of making a little altar for either a family member or celebrity. Shadow boxes were made with pictures and decorations to represent the person; also posters with a background story were created. To show all the beautiful projects and honor each chosen person, a memorial was set up at the library displaying the student’s hard work. Besides our school, our community was ready to celebrate and honor this day as well.
Halloween On October 31 every year we celebrate a holiday known as Halloween. Celebrating consists of traditional activities such as: trick-or-treating, haunted houses, dressing up as your favorite character, carving jack-o-lanterns. There’s tons of fun stuff to do on Halloween, but there’s tons of history behind it as well. A lot of people think that Halloween and Día de los Muertos are similar, but in this essay I will tell you why they are, in fact, very different. Google says, “Halloween or Hallowe'en, also known as Allhalloween, All Hallows' Eve, or All Saints' Eve, is a celebration observed in a number of countries on 31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows' Day“ and “Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico, in particular the Central and South regions, and by people of Mexican ancestry living in other places, especially the United States.” They are different through their dates, their symbols, and their food.
Today I will be talking about the holiday we call Halloween. Halloween is where we all dress up in costumes and get candy from houses on the thirty first of October. Here are three things about halloween. First, I am going to be talking the history of halloween.
Halloween and Day of the Dead, despite their similarities, are very different. They are similar because they both have sugary treats and they are different because they are celebrated in different ways, and the preparation of the holidays are different. Day of the Dead is a holiday celebrated in Mexico, and Central America where people celebrate their ancestors souls and bring them some of their favorite things to their graves and throw many parties. Halloween is a day when children go out in costumes to trick-or-treat for candies and other sugary items, people also setup decorations outside their houses that look go along with the holiday.

The Story of Marie LaVeau “The Voodoo Queen” Marie LaVeau was one of the most well-known voodoo queen in the 1800s. Voodoo is the most misconceived religion, but with Marie’s supernatural powers that lend toward the scared of evil spirits, answering prayer requests. Marie LaVeau was born on Sept 10, 1794 in New Orleans, LA and was the daughter of Charles Leaveaux, and his slave mistress name Marqurite. Marie was mixed with black, white, and Indian. Some people stated that her father was a rich creole plantation owner.
The Day of the Dead and Halloween are alike in many ways. During the Day of the Dead, people dress in costumes and celebrate their dead loved ones returning to them. Similarly, on Halloween, people also dress in costumes and go “Trick or Treating”. Both holidays also come from Catholic roots, and believe the veil between the living and dead worlds is thinnest on these days. During the Day of the Dead celebrations, people cook, eat, and have a party, similar to what others do on Halloween.
What is the difference between The Day of The Death and Halloween? In Mexican culture, we celebrate The Day of The Death on November 1 to honor ancestors and loved ones who passed away and invite those spirits back into our homes and be part of the family. In America people celebrate Halloween on October 31 and this tradition is related to The Day of The Death. However, these two traditions are similar but different meaning to American and Mexican culture in how people celebrate, different kinds of food, and decorations. One of the things that Halloween and The Day of The Death differ is how it’s celebrated.
(It is not the same thing as Halloween.) However, once the Spanish started migrating things changed a bit. The Catholics especially did not like the pagan nature of the holiday and therefore tried to rid of it completely by changing the date to November 1st and 2nd and changing the name to All Saints’ Day. However, the holiday continued and is celebrated to this day.
On one Friday morning, I woke up with an abundance of excitement I screamed, “Today is the day!” Then I hopped out of bed, threw my school uniform on and headed to school. At lunch my friend Madeline asked, “are you and Jake meeting up at voodoo?”. Jake was this guy that I had a huge crush on he was tall, handsome, and funny. I replied to her question by saying, “hopefully”.
General education classes are a common aspect of universities all across the country. However, after examining the statistics, I believe that colleges are requiring too many classes outside of students’ majors. Not only are students forced to enroll in courses that they are not interested in, but they are also struggling to stay motivated in school. Since students are not retaining the information gained in these classes, colleges are also putting these individuals in an unnecessary amount of debt. While there is merit in taking these general courses, the amount of classes needed over four years is discouraging and expensive.
