Halloween is a fun holiday; trick or treating, dressing up, eating candy, and visiting haunted houses. But where do these ‘traditions’ come from? Is it a religious holiday? Is there a good reason why we celebrate it? Or is it all just one big trick?
Halloween, or All Hallow’s Evening, dates back to 1745. It stems from the old Celtic festival, Samhain. The ancient Gaels thought that October 31st was the day when the line between the living and dead blurred, and that the dead could bring illness and diseases to people and crops. The festivals would usually include bonfires to bring insects to the area, which would then bring bats to the area. In order to appease the dead, masks and costumes would also be worn.
