Imagine sitting at home enjoying time with your family feeling safe and loved. When all of a sudden your family is being ripped apart and your home no longer feels like a safe place. This is likely what the Jewish people felt like when concentration camps formed during WWII
(World War 2). Gerda Weissmann was one of the Jewish people to survive the horrific experiences of the camp and was eventually freed upon liberation. Gerda is an inspiration to many and the author of the book “All of my life”. Unfortunately, not all Jews were so lucky. This essay will help to inform its reader of the challenges Gerda faced in her childhood, during the camp, and upon liberation.
Gerda’s Weissman's childhood started normal and by the age of 15 was completely torn apart. Gerda Weissmann was born in Bielsko, Poland, on May 8th of 1924 as a Jew. Gerda attended a public elementary school and a catholic high school. Everything changed for Gerda and her family on September 1st, 1939, when Nazi, Germany invaded Poland and WWII began. Very quickly things started to change for the worse. The Jewish people basically lost their identification as well as their religion. According to the article, “Gerda Weissmann and Kurt Klein” it says “On May 7th, 1945, after a five-month long death march through Eastern Europe, U.S. Army soldiers liberated Gerda Weissmann and a handful of other survivors. Upon liberation Gerda was able to do amazing things despite all of her trauma. Kurt Klein and Gerda Weissmann got married on June 18, 1946 in paris. This all allowed Gerda to write her autobiography, “All But My Life” and she was able to raise 3 children. The experiences Gerda faced during her early years of life motivated her to travel the world and share her story, this was a way for her to
