Author’s Purpose Understanding an author’s purpose for writing a story allows the reader to better understand and learn from the text being studied. Erich Maria Remarque’s purpose for writing the novel, All Quiet on the Western Front is a desire to accurately describe the experience of the soldier. Throughout the novel, many detailed injuries are described, as well as the multitude of emotions a soldier experiences as their comrades are being violently taken away from them.
