This essay was written to compare the short stories “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury and “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson. These narratives have a sorrowful plot, open endings, an unhappy main character, and make us think about how we treat our peers, why we treat them the way we do and how we communicate with people. I have written about the similarities and differences of these two stories because, I'd like to emphasize the important details that are alike and different in "All Summer in a Day” and “The Lottery”.
Both “The Lottery” and “All Summer in a Day” make the reader think deeply about how much we have and how much we all take for granted. Ray Bradbury and Shirley Jackson want us to acknowledge the impact our bad fallouts and actions have on others. The main characters are mistreated to benefit everyone besides them. In “The Lottery” Tessa supported the lottery because she believed it had benefits toward herself and the ones she loved. She believed it was the right thing until she was the person chosen to be sacrificed and in “All Summer in a Day” Margot's foolish classmates lock her in a closet while the sun comes out because they didn't realize it would affect her horribly not being able to see the sun, they only realize their wrongs after they enjoy playing out in the sun. The stories are both depressing, and sad as well as they have a purposely unfinished ending leaving the reader to think what's happen next with deep thought. They also have the main characters being females that are mistreated and have the setting take place in an isolated
