To describe the rain, Bradbury narrates “with the drum and gush of water” and “the concussion of storms so heavy they were tidal waves come over the island.” When the author describes this rain as a concussion that shows that the rain is shaking the planet because of its ferocity.

Interestingly enough, Ray Bradbury has chosen to explore this theme in a story of a future generation that has the chance to travel between planets due to evolution. This leads to people living on Venus and having to see the sun only once every seven years. While this girl got to see the sun every day down on earth but when they came to live on Venus the other kids were so jealous that they exalted her from even seeing the sun until the next seven years passed. The reading and writing connection allowed students the opportunity to look closely at an author’s writing and speculate about possible themes. We used the short story, All Summer in a Day, by Ray Bradbury as a model of how to write a thematic essay. Students wrote a thematic essay about a book of their own choosing following the procedures presented. The thematic essays went through a process of focused mini lessons, individual and small group conferencing, independent and peer revisions.
