In Rad Bradbury’s short story “All Summer in a Day,” the power of jealousy comes to light. Children in a classroom on Venus wait for a very rare event that is rumored to be happening that day, the sun is supposed to come out after seven years of rain. A girl named Margot is the only one there who has seen the sun, and when the sun arrives late, the other children become jealous and lock her in the closet because they think she is lying. In the poem “Jealousy” by Rupert Brooke, the speaker is so jealous he wishes bad things upon his past lover. Both the poem and short story illustrate the power and effects of jealousy. In the opening lines of the story, we are given a detailed description of the dreary atmosphere of Venus. This description of this rainy place sets the stage for Margot and the other children dying to see the sun. Margot is then developed as an outsider because she was born on Earth and still had distant memories of the sun. She tended to “[stand] apart from the children” and when she rarely spoke she had a “quiet voice.” The other children knew she was from Earth and they acted different towards her, too. The poet uses words like “silly” and “stupid” to show his original disdain with how his lover left him. He also notes that he “knows most hidden things...” showing how he was very close with him woman and this adds to his jealousy. A transition in the intensity of his anger is shown when he starts making a mockery of the other man his lover chose. The author also shows his anger and jealousy by describing how they will be when they are older and how the other man will lose his attractiveness.
