Changing Inside: Wounded by War In bad situations, people have the tendency to not think or act clearly. War is a prime example of the way the human mind acts in tough situations, the human mind tends to act as a guard to what a body cannot handle. Throughout All The Light We Cannot See, Anthony Doerr introduces the lives of many characters who have had to live through war. Specifically into the lives of Frederick, Werner, and Marie-Laure. All who endured life-changing events who shaped them into stronger people. There is so much love and bonds being shared between each character and the families of those characters. He had a deep connection to nature especially, birds. While in the Institution, which is a school that teaches mechanical sciences and so much of many technological advances, he was seen as one of the weakest members. Frederick deeply cared for his family, and this was shown various times. Werner and Frederick get close so, Frederick takes him to meet his parents. Where it is then revealed that the main reason that Werner was at the camp, was because his family needed him to be there. This playing a huge role in displaying the absolute need for status throughout the time of war. Not only did Frederick care for his family, he cared for those around him. Frederick was known for wearing glasses and being extremely skinny, this contributed to the way the other boys viewed him. These characteristics were described as weak compared to the other boys in the camp. The commandant, Bastian, would constantly yell at the boys to never let the weakest of the group define the whole group because of this Frederick was constantly targeted while at the Institute. Even though he endured so much hate and ridicule, frederick never gave up and left when he had the option to. At one occasion, there was a prisoner who supposedly ‘stolen milk’ and stealing wasn’t tolerated, so Bastian ordered all the boys to grab buckets of water and line up to throw them onto the prisoner. Unfortunately as a young child she had deteriorating eyesight which led to her blindness. Marie-Laure is a young french girl living with her father, Daniel. Daniel sheltered Marie-Laure for the most of her childhood, he would make puzzles for her to solve at all her birthdays. At the very start Daniel knew that at some point Marie will have to learn to get by on her own so he would also make models of the town. Marie-Laure greatly benefited from the models, she was even able to lead the way back home when she was with her father. However, throughout the town there were rumors about threats that are soon to come. Her father didn’t want to risk anything so they evacuate to her great-uncle Etienne’s house in Saint-Malo. She is soon greeted with his great friend and housekeeper Madame Manec who shows them around the house, the first day she doesn’t get to officially meet Etienne. Marie does however, bond quickly with Madame Manec who shows her around the house and later around the town. What Marie-Laure doesn’t know right away is that both her father and Madame Manec were involved in some form of a rebellion because one night her father is caught measuring the buildings and he is arrested. This was a huge transition for Marie-Laure because she is losing a huge helping figure in her life. Luckily when they first moved to Saint-Malo the first thing Daniel did was build a model of the town for Marie-Laure. Madame Manec
