While reading reading Anthony Doerr’s novel All the Light We Cannot See, the legend of the Sea of Flames captured my attention and held it until the conclusion of the book. This intrigued me because of the character Marie-Laure LeBlanc who introduces the reader to the stone while going with her father to his locksmith job in the Paris Museum of Natural History. The reader is introduced to dynamic characters such as Werner Pfenning and his sister Jutta Pfenning, two orphans residing in a care house in Germany, all of whom are connected to Marie-Laure LeBlanc and the stone and the legend. It is the unfolding of the story in relation to the legend and the characters as they evolve in relation to it which intrigue the reader to contemplate the significance during every interaction. …show more content…

The present time in the novel takes place during the siege of Saint-Malo where Marie-Laure hides in her Great Uncle’s attic from a German officer while Werner Pfenning is trapped under a fallen hotel. Subsequently, they save each other’s lives when they meet and escape the siege and in a string of unlikely events, Werner dies, seemingly due to the Sea of Flames. After relinquishing the stone, Marie-Laure Leblanc goes on to become becomes a renowned scientist, and lives a full long and enriched life. It is apparent from reading this this book that we are all profoundly affected by the people we intersect with. Despite our differences, every connection can have a profound affect on the course of our lives. We are in someway or another set on a course through our experiences whether subtle or traumatic, and our journey through life is influenced by others as well as by what we believe as the cause of our
