Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem Massachusetts, in 1804. He wrote the novels “The Scarlet Letter” and “The House of Seven Gables.” However he wrote many short stories such as: "My Kinsman, Major Molineux" (1832), "Roger Malvin's Burial" (1832), "Young Goodman Brown" (1835), and the collection “Twice Told Tales.” Hawthorne was mainly known for his novels. He was usually a dark writer. His use of allegory and symbolism made people want to read his books. Hawthorne had been born into the 6th generation of his Salem family. One of his uncles was a judge in the Salem witch trials. This was an embarrassment to Hawthorne. This caused him to get a (w) put in his name. He wanted to be separated from that part of his family. He stayed in a ‘haunted room.’ This is where he wrote dark tales and drew odd drawings that are still unique to this day. He said these 12 years was like a “deep dark dream.” Years later Hathorne meets Sophia Peabody, a painter, and they engage. The happy couple moves into a rented house in Concord known as “The Old Manse.” Three years later they have their first daughter, Una. Two years later they have a son. He remained nameless the first few months of his life. However they eventually agreed on the name “Julian.” The family then moves to Salem, where Hawthorne gets a job at the Custom House. He then quits his job, saying he hates the people in Salem. This is when he started writing “The Scarlet Letter,” which he says refers to the adultery and hypocrisy in Salem. As if all this chaos was not enough, his mother dies. He goes into deep depression, but still continues writing The Scarlet Letter. The novel publishes and is an immediate hit. Even though it was referring to the bad ways of Salem, people still loved it. This same year, his third and final daughter is born,
