In the story, “Marigolds”, the author, Eugenia Collier uses imagery, diction and connotation in deep way. One example is of connotation is “... how thick were the bars of our cage”. This gives a negative connotation because it's pointing out how big their poverty is. An example for imagery is “running together and combining like fresh water color painting in the rain”. This shows how she and her friends would run around and play together.

In Barbara Kingsolver’s story, “The Bean Trees”, something that makes it so effective is her use of figurative language to depict scenery. In chapter 12, Mattie takes Taylor, Esperanza and Estevan to a beautiful desert at the time of the first rain, so they can see the natural world come to life. In order to make the scene come alive, Kingsolver uses sillies, metaphors and personification as a mean of figurative language. Kingsolver personifies the mountains and city.

Russell uses feral diction in “St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves” to prove that people cannot change who the are. For example, Kyle tried to talk to Claudette, but just succeeded in annoying her instead. Claudette immediately reacted and, according to the story, “I narrowed my eyes at Kyle and flattened my ears, something I hadn’t done for months” (249).

His main intention is entertain but I can argue that he wrote the story to inform as well.

Steinbeck supports his defense by providing the reader with imagery, symbolism and intense biblical allusions. The author’s purpose is to illustrate the migrant farmers in order to fully exploit their positive aspects in the midst of hardships. Steinbeck writes in a passionate tone for an audience that requires further understanding of the situation.
In Eugene Collier’s short story, Marigolds, the author used figurative language and diction to convey a serious and angry tone on poverty. Marigolds, a tale full of voice elements, addressed the theme of poverty with indignation and sincerity. Though Lizabeth, Collier narrated the story; it was about a girl recalling her life during World War 2 in a poor family. In the first example of voice element, Lizabeth described poverty as “the cage in which we all were trapped” (Collier 1). She uses this metaphor to explain how penury anchored her family.
Literal sense: In Psalm 22, someone cries out to God and pleads for Him to save him from torments of his enemies. Progressively through the passage, he changes his tone. It goes from angry and negative to positive. He then thanks God for rescuing him.
The poem, “Annabel Lee” by Edgar Allan Poe dramatizes the theme of everlasting love. The use of contrasting diction effectively conveys this message. For example, the speaker states, “That the wind came out of the cloud by night, / Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee” (26-26). Poe uses the wind to represent a disease, such as tuberculosis. In addition, the choice of the words, “chilling” and “killing” and the use of cacophony emphasize Annabel Lee’s death and the effect it had on the speaker.
Edgar Allen Poe is a true genius in the writing world. He uses an abundance of literary skills and rich vocabulary to make a strong story that keeps people engaged. Edgar Allen Poe is the author of the three stories, “Tell Tale Heart”, “The Black Cat”, and “The Cask of Amontillado”. All of these stories are similar because of Poe’s literary consistency and strong vocabulary. Poe’s writing is unusual.
For example, the author uses words like “pungent”, “feline”, “cultivate”, “tract” and “bevy of vixen” to describe the animals, things she is doing and smells. In the poem “A Blessing”, the author uses the
Poetry is a piece of literature where the author shares his ideas of a subject or person. He is attempting to allow the reader an understanding of his feelings regarding this subject. Most of the time poetry can be very pleasing to the ear; however, at times it can be written in a manner that is odd. Some poetry is written in a way that the reader can “hear”, “feel”, “see” or “taste” elements in the poem. Some poems may rhyme while others may not need to in order to convey the message.
The boys’ grandmother, Granana, starts the first echo. On page six, the boys look at Olivia’s drawings while their grandmother calls from the other room, “Revelation 20:13!...Bingo!”(6). This Bible verse states, “...and the sea gave up the dead which were in it…,” referencing the way Olivia’s ghost exists in the sea. This verse does not have an echo, but immediately after this scene the boys have a revelation.
“Bishop’s carefully judged use of language aids the reader to uncover the intensity of feeling in her poetry.” Elizabeth Bishop’s superb use of language in her introspective poetry allows the reader to grasp a better understand of feeling in her poetry. Bishop’s concentration of minor details led to her being referred to as a “miniaturist”, however this allows her to paint vivid imagery, immersing the reader in her chosen scenario. Through descriptive detail, use of metaphor, simile, and many other excellently executed stylistic devices, the reader can almost feel the emotion being conveyed. Bishop clearly demonstrates her innate talent to communicate environments at ease.
