When I analyze this painting, my eyes are drawn to the building in the bottom left which seems to resemble a church. It has a white steeple and roof line along with light red brick for the walls. The color, style, size, and position of this particular building sets it apart from the rest of the buildings which all seem to blend together along the composition. The building’s edge meets right with the fence line along the field in the bottom left corner of the piece. It prompts viewers to begin their focus on the left of the painting instead of drawing our eyes directly to the center.

Horace Miner, the author of “Body Ritual among the Nacirema”, used very interesting and descriptive choice of words to describe the routines that modern Americans go through from an outsider point of view. He gives different terms to describe mundane routines, like brushing your teeth, and exaggerate the details as something that is bizarre. Some rituals Miner described as illogical because there was a low rate of success in what they are trying to achieve. This reveals that what determines something to be socially acceptable is not through logic, but only though the popularity of the community. One of the rituals that Miner described as illogical but everyone still do the ritual was the fact that the people kept going to the “holy-mouth-man”, or also known as the dentist, even if their teeth are still decaying.
In front, people can follow the direction of the river with combination of blue tones and white. Near of the river, people appreciate the mixture of yellows form the grass and the greens of the trees which project the importance of Pontiac as a protector of the valley. The artist represents the movement of the grass with tones of yellows and browns. The Daodejing of Laozi was first written in classical Chinese between 6th BCE and 3rd BCE. Laozi who the founder of the idea of Daoism, which is primarily focused around living with the Dao (Tao) and not against the Way. The Daodejing can be split up into three parts; Dao (Tao) equals the Way or natural living, de (te) meaning virtue and power, and jing (ching) in context means classic. The main idea of the Daodejing simply put is, no being can abandon their place or change the “natural limits” without dismantling the balance of the Way. The key purpose is to live with the Way and not against it, otherwise any action is self-defeating.

There are many Daoist influences to be seen in the Chinese art. Chinese paintings often include common themes from the Daodejing: the infinity, flow, and mystery of nature. To be more specific, the book’s images of the flowing river, the valley, or the uncarved block of stone are some of the typical elements in such paintings. Another significant field of art influenced by Daoism is poetry. Chinese poetry frequently recalls themes found in the Daodejing and the Zhuangzi: the joy of life in the countryside, away from the rushed atmosphere of the city; the change of seasons; harmony with nature; and general simplicity.
As outlined in chapter 10 of the course text, inequality in housing and wealth is a major problem. The United States is described to be the most unequal countries in the western hemisphere. But with the inequalities when it comes to wealth, the United States is one of the richest countries in the world. Wealth is the sum total of a person’s assets. These assets include, cash in the bank and value of all properties, not only land but houses, cars, stocks, and bonds, and retirements savings.
In the study called Body Ritual Among the Nacirema, the author calls the rituals and ceremonies the people perform “excessive”. They are insane rituals that people in America wouldn’t seem to think about doing. They sound so different, and unusual. As one reads the fieldwork, it raises a lot of questions and concerns. To anyone from another country it would seem these rituals are excessive because of the way they are performed, and the things they use to perform them.
