When people think of someone in their family who provides for them many think of their mom or dad. Although, that is not always the case. Darry is the older brother and provider to Sodapop Curtis and Ponyboy Curtis in the book The Outsiders written by S.E. Hinton. Darry’s parents died in a car accident so he was left raising his two younger brothers, which are sixteen and fourteen. Although Darry can be harsh, he still cares deeply about his brothers and their lives.
Darry and Ponyboy have a substantially complex relationship, with many fluctuations in their feelings towards each other, or their perception of those feeling throughout the book. In the beginning of the book, it is thought by Ponyboy that Darry is hard and apathetic towards him. As Ponyboy says in the book, “My face got hot as I bit my lip. Darry… what was Darry like? “He’s…” I started to say he was a good ol’ guy
They believe that Ponyboy should give up his dreams of a bright future to get an occupation in his current neighborhood to help his brothers pay for necessities. Instead, Ponyboy must live up to the expectations Darry has for him. In The Outsiders, Ponyboy, thinking about Darry, stated, “He was going somewhere. And I was going to be like him. I wasn’t going to live in a lousy neighborhood all my life” (138).
According to Sodapop, why did Darry get upset with Pony? p. 17-18 Darry got upset with Ponyboy because he went walking home from the movies on his own and got jumped by the Socs instead of asking for a ride. How were Ponyboy and his brother different from other hoods or greasers?

Some troops are ill, some are still in good condition, and for the rest their journey had already ended. So with that being said, would I stay at Valley Forge? My answer is no because of the bad conditions.
In the beginning of the story, he hated fighting. He didn’t want to fight or hurt people, and knew that he wasn’t a good fighter. Pony was scared of fights and getting hurt, and his first instinct was to run away. This was shown when the Socs attacked him at the beginning of the novel. The first thing he tried was to run away back to his house, but even when they had him cornered he still didn’t go on the attack.
S.E. Hinton is known for astounding everyone with her book The Outsiders which she wrote when she was 15 years old and was still in high school. Dally's heroic act involves sacrificing his own life to save Ponyboy. After Johnny's death, Ponyboy was grief-stricken and became reckless, resulting in him being attacked by a group of Socs. Dally, who was with Ponyboy at the time, saw the attack and quickly came to his rescue. He pulled out an unloaded gun, hoping to scare the Socs away. However, the police arrived on the scene, and Dally was shot and killed.
Ponyboy becomes less afraid of Darry when he realizes that Darry actually does love him. After Ponyboy gets to see Darry when he is taken to the hospital because of the church fire, Darry is standing outside waiting for him. On page 96 Ponyboy writes, Suddenly I realized, horrified, that Darry was crying... Darry did care about me, maybe as much as he cared about Soda. Ponyboy also becomes less afraid of Darry when he starts fighting back when Darry yells at him.
The reason he comes home late is because Ponyboy slowly dozed off in the parking lot after . Darry does not accept this as a valid excuse. So therefore there is a consequence. The consequence for this action is that Darry slaps Ponyboy. The whole thing takes place a bit like this, “ ‘You don’t yell at him!’
In life there is many lessons to learn. Lifes about choices and decisions that you make which can drastically affect one's quality of living in present and future. In life it is important to have hope that things will get better to stay gold. One's decisions in life can drastically affect one's life in the future and present. In life is not everything is as it seems on the surface.
“People influence people, nothing influences people more than a recommendation from a trusted friend”(Zuckerberg), this is true since people always want an opinion or something to help them make their decisions. In the novel The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, it goes over the life of a teenager and the pain of losing your loved ones and only having your friends to rely on. All decisions made in the story were crucial in every way since it went over real life situations. One character who’s decisions were influenced by the gang members called the Greasers and the environment he lived in was Johnny. Some decisions Johnny made that were influenced by the gang members were killing the Soc, wanting to turn himself in, and saving the children in the burning church.
In a passage in the story, it says ‘“Let me fight Darry…” said Ponyboy. “Well”-Darry gave in- “ I guess you can”’ (Hinton 135). As a matter of fact, Pony shouldn’t be fighting at all, because it’s a precarious activity. Darry is encouraging violence to him, and that shouldn’t be acceptable on his behalf, because he should be a good influence on him, not a bad one.
“If I brought home B's, he wanted A's, and if I got A's, he wanted to make sure they stayed A's. ”(12),Pony sees Darry as more of a controlling hand over his life rather than his older brother who is trying to give him the opportunities that he never had. "I reckon it never occurred to you that your brothers might be worrying their heads off and afraid to call the police because something like that could get you two thrown in a boys' home so quick it'd make your head spin. And you were asleep in the lot? Ponyboy, what on earth is the matter with you?
The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton describes the need for people to belong because one sticking out causes bad judgment and isolation . In daily life, people try to make themselves socially appropriate. When the Greasers locate themselves near the Socs, the Greasers try their best not to draw attention, so the Socs do not start joking about them as usual. Ponyboy, one of the smartest Greasers, recalls, "One time in biology…I forgot what I was doing, or I would never have done it…this girl right beside me kind of gasped, and said, ‘They are right. You are a hood.’
