The Alvirne High School Fire Interviewed by Kellie Porter Written By Averie Bissell. It was early morning on September 9, 1974. My grandmother, Kellie Porter, was a sophomore in high school. She had been sleeping at her friend Terri Mac's house. Kellie woke up suddenly. There was a knock on the door. She turned to her friend Terri, and shook her awake. Terri woke up with a groan and sleepily strolled to her bedroom door. Terri’s mom walked into the room with a worried expression. Girls, you don’t have school today.” “What? Why!” The girls asked in unison. “Because your school is on fire!” a look of fear in her eyes. Kellie and Terri jumped up and ran to the closet and threw on an old sweatshirt and a pair of sweatpants. As they park in the side lot, no one can take their eyes off the school. Even though they all have seen it in ruins multiple times, it is still a shock every time they see it. They get out of their car and start the walk to the soccer fields at the back of the school. Leaves crunch under their feet as they walk. It has been a couple of months since the fire, and the crew that is rebuilding the school says that they think that the new school will be completed sometime in the next year. Even though they can't go to school in this building, does not mean that the school spirit has died. There are tons of signs reading, number one soccer team in New England, and go Broncos! A crowd had already gathered on the sidelines of the game when Kellie and her friends arrived, the sounds of the cheering crowd could be heard from the parking lot. It seemed like the whole town was there to cheer on the team.
